How to check your speed
-
Tap “Start speedometer”
Your browser asks for location access. Choose “Allow” — the speedometer can’t measure speed without GPS.
-
Wait for a GPS fix
Outdoors this takes a few seconds. The accuracy badge turns green when the signal is good (±10–25 m).
-
Start moving
Your speed updates about every second. Max, average speed and distance are recorded until you reset the trip.
What the speedometer shows
- Current speed — the big number and the needle. It comes from the Doppler speed your phone’s GPS chip reports, lightly smoothed so it doesn’t jump.
- Max — the highest reliable speed since you started or reset. Readings with poor accuracy are ignored, so a GPS glitch won’t give you a fake top speed.
- Avg — your average moving speed: distance divided by the time you were actually moving. Stops at traffic lights don’t drag it down.
- Distance — how far you’ve travelled, in miles, kilometers or nautical miles depending on the unit you choose.
- Trip time — how long the speedometer has been running.
- GPS accuracy — the radius of uncertainty of your position. Under 25 m is good; over 60 m means speed may be unreliable.
Need a different unit? Switch the gauge between mph, km/h, knots (for boats and planes) and m/s. Your choice is remembered on this device. To convert numbers by hand, use the km/h to mph and mph to km/h converters.
How accurate is a GPS speedometer?
With a clear view of the sky, a phone’s GPS speed is typically accurate to within about 1–2 km/h (1 mph). That’s often more accurate than your car’s speedometer, which is calibrated to read high on purpose.
Accuracy drops when the signal is weak or reflected:
- in tunnels, underground stations and parking garages (no signal at all);
- between tall buildings, where signals bounce off walls;
- deep inside a train carriage or a plane, away from the windows;
- right after you start, before the phone has a solid fix.
If the accuracy badge shows “Poor”, move closer to a window or wait a few seconds. Want to know exactly how far off your car is? Run the car speed test — it compares your dashboard reading with GPS and calculates the error in percent.

Speedometer not working?
The speed stays at 0
The speedometer shows 0 until you move faster than about 2 km/h (1 mph), so it doesn’t jitter while you stand still. If you are moving and it still shows 0, check the accuracy badge — your phone may not have a GPS fix yet.
“Location access is blocked”
You (or your browser) denied the location request. On iPhone, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Safari Websites and choose “While Using the App”. On Android, tap the icon to the left of the address bar, open Permissions and allow location. Then press “Try again”.
The speed jumps around
This happens with a weak signal. Laptops and some tablets use Wi-Fi positioning, which can’t measure speed properly — use a phone instead, and keep it where it can see the sky.
Your location stays on your phone
The speedometer runs entirely in your browser. Your coordinates are used only to calculate speed and distance on your device. They are never uploaded, stored or shared. There’s no account and no tracking of your trips. Read our privacy policy for details.

Frequently asked questions
How fast am I going right now?
Press Start speedometer at the top of this page and allow location access. The big number is your current speed, measured by your phone’s GPS and updated about once per second. Switch between mph, km/h, knots and m/s with the buttons above the gauge.
Is this online speedometer free?
Yes. The speedometer is completely free, needs no sign-up and nothing to install. It runs in your browser on iPhone, Android, tablets and laptops.
Why is my GPS speed lower than my car speedometer?
Car speedometers are designed to over-read. In Europe and many other countries, UN regulation R39 says a speedometer must never show less than your true speed and may show up to 10% + 4 km/h more. That’s why your dashboard may say 70 mph while GPS shows 66–67 mph. GPS speed is usually the more accurate one. Use our car speed test to measure the difference.
Does the speedometer work without internet?
GPS itself doesn’t need mobile data. Once this page has loaded, the speedometer keeps working even if your connection drops, for example in a train or in the countryside. You only need a connection to open the page.
Does it work on a laptop or desktop computer?
Most laptops and desktops have no GPS chip. They estimate location from Wi-Fi networks, which is too rough to measure speed. For a reliable reading, open this page on a phone or a tablet with GPS.
Can I check my speed on a plane or a train?
Yes. Sit by a window so your phone can see the sky. GPS works in airplane mode on most phones, so you can watch your cruising speed (often 800–900 km/h, or 500–560 mph). For trains, try the dedicated train speed test.
What is HUD mode?
HUD (head-up display) mode shows only a huge speed number on a black screen. Turn on Mirror for windshield, place your phone flat on the dashboard at night, and the reflection on the windshield reads the right way round.
Is it safe to use while driving?
Set it up before you drive, mount your phone securely and never touch it while driving. The speedometer keeps the screen awake, so you don’t need to interact with it on the road. Always obey posted speed limits.
Does the speedometer store or share my location?
No. Your position is processed only inside your browser to calculate speed and distance. Nothing is sent to our servers and nothing is saved, except your preferred unit on your own device.
